blankets

the air broke and suddenly it was fall

summer put on a sweater
and looked at a cold mirror
sweet put on bitter
and looked away

breathing lighter, sleeping better
optimism offense, hopeful hopeless
drinking sobriety, sobering mortality

the sky lost ten pounds one night
eating the entire time
the girl came and then she didn't

scream was found on a milk carton
silent explanations became quiet

i wrote it all down, erased it
and then waited and waited
and waited for myself
to get angry for waiting

i tried to fix the air
but the air fixed

me
instead
